The Viewpoints
4 Workshops with Synaesthetic Theatre
Third Saturday of the Month (9/18/04, 10/16/04, 11/20/04, 12/18/04)
Synaesthetic led a four-part series
for Fall 2004 in which participants explored Viewpoints from the ground up, experimented with the use of sound and music,
created choreography and practiced using the Viewpoints as a rehearsal tool. Originated by dancer/choreographer Mary Overlie,
the Viewpoints provide a simple and profound language with which performers, choreographers and directors can communicate.
Mary introduced 6 labels: Space, Time, Shape, Movement, Logic and Emotion. Having deconstructed the basic building blocks
of physical performance, the performer, choreographer or director is free to examine these separately or in tandem, from all
angles, in an infinite investigation. Synaesthetic Theatre utilizes the Viewpoints extensively during our collaborative rehearsal
process for ensemble-building, character exploration, and the development of themes, relationships and staging.
